Mos Def - Latest Innovation In Selling His Album

In a rather bold and ground breaking move, Mos Def is selling t-shirts as his album. Linking up with lnaclothing.com the shirts will come with a unique download code, in which purchasers of the shirts can download the album free off the net. Though soundscan will currently not count the shirts sales as units sold for the record. Though in reality, I think that will matter not to Mos Def if he reaches the satisfying figures with the shirt sales.

Reference Link: HipHopdx

I honestly have to applaud Def's decision. An I won't be surprised if artists start to choose more innovative ways to market, promote and sell their works. It's just another example of how the formula's of old are losing their credibility and authenticity. It's safe to say that the Digital Independent Era is well on its way to take the industries reigns.

The Manual: Autotune... To Use Or Not To Use?

The Controversy around this plug in right now is insane, Alot of people feel a certain way... Some of the Purist/"Real Hip Hop" Community Are completely against it... Alot of The More Mainstream heads Are Completely for it and dont see what the big deal is, but I think Theres More to It, than what people Are currently looking at, and nobody has really attempted to take a close look at what all the "Fuckin' Fussins For (Because I'm Grubbin More... and I Pack Heat... Like the Oven Door") Aite, now on one end... you have a group of people that are Sick of hearing the same shit, they feel the format of comercial radio is generic and it needs to be changed. and on the other, you have a group of people who are making money off this generic music, or are into it and/or dont feel its generic.. Its just an assist to give you a more trendy sound to them, I guess... But In Any Event, I see the points of both sides, But I think their both right in some respects, but they both need a closer look at what the core of the controversy really is.

Now, I gotta Quote Jim Jones For a Second:

"We're getting money off of autotune, it's just sounding like somebody's trying to knock a hustle and I don't think that's a little bit gangster if you ask me," Jones explained. "We getting money. He's knocking the hustle, ya dig? If these young men are making money off of autotune why would you try to stop that, when you got all the money already?" (106 & Park)

See... This is where dudes is missing the point, I dont think Jay Z is Attacking dudes just to knock their hustle or Stop them from making money, To Me it looks like Jay is Tired of Mediocre Talents Making Money Off a Cheap Effect thats Played Out Anyway. Cuz First Off, If You need Autotune To make Money, Are you Really talented enough to deserve to Make it? If Autotune is the Core Of your whole Repitour, Then Why Should You have A spot in Regular Rotation when theres 50 other rappers lined up to be your spot with a million times the talent as you? You Mean To Tell Me you Aint Knocking their hustle? you Aint Making It Hard For Them? I heard Graphs "On Da Spot freestyle" And It was Sad... That dude Has crazy Talent, Along with alot of mainstream Potential, And "Pop Champagne " Is making it hard for him to Break Through, And Right Now, Jay Z Is his Only Voice on a Mainstream level.

But thats Besides the Point, the Point Is... That so many people are trying to make a quick buck off autotune, its fucking the whole genre up, and I dont care what anyone says... "Hip Hop" > "The Next Autotune Abusin ass niggas Pockets" Any day... And If they Dont like it, Then they can Take Their Music and Grow, and learn how to make a hit without autotune... Jay did it... so did Wayne, & Kanye... Which is Probably why Jay Said he wasent mad at them for it. Because I dont Think the Issue is Autotune... I think the issue is how you use it... If your a talented dude, and your using it for fun, or because its in style, and You have more to you than A Catchy autotune assited hook, than its ok, but if your really just a dude who's using autotune... and not great a much else... You need to give it a rest or step your game up.

The Manual: Soulja boy wants to reach out to Jay, Kanye and Wayne for a Classic Album?

All Hip Hop Recently posted an Article about how Soulja boy Wants to Make a Classic album, And How he says he's Grown Up, He's no longer a Kid. Though I cant help but to feel where he's coming from, because it must be frustrating as hell to gain everything you could possibly want and acomplish everything you once thought you needed to acomplish to be dope in this game, but still lack the respect of a lot of people. I sympathize for him, but I still think he's missing the point. People arent hating on him because he never did a track with Jay Z or Kanye. There looking at him as someone who didnt respect the technical aspect of his craft and make sure is rhymes were on point, and someone who used the gimickey cheap method to force feed us more bullshit music with no point or artistic value via the radio and internet. If He's going to do the same thing he did with the last 2 albums, except these are gonna have Jay Z and Kanye on it... How in the hell is that gonna be different? Jay And Kanye might have Classic verses, but the album will be the same old shit. And this isint a hate blog... I really want to see soulja boy make a classic album, to teach this generation what a classic is, and open their eyes to the fact that theres more out their than "turning your swag on" and "Shaking your booty meat". But the truth of the matter is, Not Everyone can Make a Classic Album, and If He wants to make one He's going to need to completely step his game up, and rethink his music from the ground up.

Truth be told, I respect this statement his making more than anything, And I like how he's aware of whats going on, Theres A Huge bandwagon of people that View Him as something like the Real Hip Hop Anti-christ Like He intentionally wakes up in the mourning and thinks "hmm how am I gonna further kill hip hop" and thats probably the furthest thing from the truth, cuz he's only human, and knows only whats put infront of him, and real hip hop, rhyme skills, and classic albums might not have been that. But that doesent excuse him from the fact that he spent the greater part of his carear so far putting out bullshit. Yes, bullshit that sold... But You could paint shit gold (or ringtone platinum in this case).. and its shit none the less... I think what Soulja Boy needs Is Less of a Classic collab or Co-sign, And More Of a Mentor who has put out classic material and could school him to what a classic is really about. Because I like what he wants to do, and think in his position he would be a good person to do it if he could, but he needs more than a feature to do it.

Chris Brown - Requests to Delay Assault Trial Denied

As we're all accustomed to the Brown/Rihanna situation which took place early this year. With pictures of the injuries Rihanna incurred due to the altercation surfacing across the net, irreparable damage has been done to Brown's career. In the latest in the trial, Brown's attorney (Mark Geragos) filed petition to delay the hearing was denied on the wednesday just past (June 17th). Brown and his attorney are due back in court this coming Monday, for the preliminary hearing. Where after its proceedings we will find out whether or not Brown is to stand trial over the assault.

Personally, regardless of his stardom or celebrity. A woman beater, is a woman beater. I hope he does time, an not no minimum security prison. He should do time just as anyone else who had done as such would. He'd wanna hope its not minimum security. He still gotta look over his shoulder for Jay-Z...

Young Jeezy - 24 23 (Gucci Mane & OJ Da Juiceman Diss)

Beef seems a never ending and constant variable in hip hop these days. An this isn't the first dispute jeezy's had with Gucci but OJ Da Juiceman? I'd never even heard of this guy until reading the May Issue of XXL. So to give you's a bit of heads up on who he be.

He's the CEO of his 32 Entertainment Record Label. Born Otis Williams Jr, 27 Years Old, straight outta Atlanta.

Supreme Mathamatics: 40 Dash Talks About Upcoming Trial, Shows, And New Projects

onefiftyone
40

40 hit me with this free beat for all you dudes out there to use

So Whats Good Wit You, How You Doing Right about Now?

I'm doin Good g, just working alot. I got caught up in some nonsense. So im appearing in court next week. I been goin to church which I never thought I'd Be doing, considering I swore I was agnostic. But religion and faith has really helped me out in hard times feel me? Especially for a cat like me that usually bottles shit up, its nice to have SOMEONE to turn to.

Oh Werd? So You been Feeling Kinda Faithfull In the Midst of all the drama?

Somethin like that, My dude DJ Salis put me on to Christianity after a By chance meeting where we were exchanging music and just catchin up, But he asked me to pray with him and I had an intense feeling on my chest the rest of the day. It was nuts. ha I dont know man, sometimes desperate times bring out the truth and whats best for you Dig?
word, I'm sure alot of people relate, you mind getting into whats going on right now? I heard your going to court on monday

Yea Im just goin for the trial. I dont really wanna get into the details. but 40 dash 1 is Definately an Innocent man. Im only 20 years old but I stopped living a stupid life nearly 3 years ago. No Drugs Liquor Guns or Gangs for me. Thats in the Past tense man. I work full time and kill this music shit with my free time

I see... So It seems like the life might have just found a way to catch you off gaurd?

Man real talk just be careful of who you associate yourself with. Like i said, I changed my life. Just being around people that slip up is enough now a days. I aint the type to start droppin names though. Theres not 1 shred of evidence tying me to any crime so I should be fine. I consider it karma really. I did alot of shit in the past, maybe this is Gods way of saying, I aint forget your big ass

haha.. yeah, karma can be bad sometimes... I wish you the best bro, But its definately a good thing that your on the right track now but How is your music coming along? whats going on with you on that tip?

Word, Music is what keeps me sane yo. Word up, If it wasnt for music Id still be on some other shit. But I been Tearin up the show circuit, And workin wit my people. I only associate myself with people that want to PROCEEEED in life, and there crafts. So its safe to say my circle lives on condenser mics and MPCs lol. but Yea I got a solo project comin out soon, Im gonna be htitin the streets hard with that and also a collabo mixtape with the team So be on the lookout. The reason yall aint seen me on the forums and internet scene lately is cause im takin a different route right now. Doin shit the old school way and creatin a buzz Nah mean god? All I Can say is I dont think Prov is ready for me. When i do shows I get the most love and the biggest ovation. But im stayin humble and keepin my eyes open cause this only the beginning

Yeah, I like to hear shit like that, I notice alot of people slack on their work ethic, or have one dimensional hustles, only focusing on one aspect... like myspace promo or w/e... How has this show thing been treatin you? What would you say to a dude thinking about taking that step?

I would tell dude to Get on the stage and Tell em what they need to hear !! The first show I was nervous as fuck, after that When your comfortable. Its a wrap. Just do what you love yo. Its just another avenue , The best in my opinion to send your message to the public. You have total control over what you wanna say. I had a dude talk to me on some confrentational shit just so i would step closer and see what he was going to say or do next. His perogative for that was to gain attention, not to fight. Use the mix to your advantage dont be scared of the shit

that sounds pretty crazy fam... So how long do you plan to be on this show shit? whats the next step for you?

Forever g, Performin is what Artists do. Its gives them a chance to express what they really have boiling up in there soul in a way that an ordinary audio track or video cant. The next step for me is getting on some mixtapes. Diggz and Rated R most likely, They in the streets crazy. Also hring some Features. Canibus and Sha Stimuli are a couple examples of cats I would like to work with. After I get my lawyer money right Thats The direction ima Roam in

I see.. So whats the next project? Whens it coming out?

You can Expect to See hard copied of '40 Days and 40 nights' By Fall. Im not really rushing this one cause I want it to be natural and have a Completed sound to it
I have in the upwards of 30+ Tracks to sift through and sort out
Plus the team is complete with 3 producers including myself
So Its just a waiting game of finding the right sound

I see.. Thats cool, I didnt know you was a producer... Its good to see you diversifying your talent

Man i like to do everything, Computer Graphics, Beats, Engineering, Spittin that raw shit I used to fuck wit Graff back in the day on that note Check the myspace, which has my graphics on the layout! Myspace.com/tracedablock

haha, so your just a well rounded dude

I try to dip my brain in everything man. You might as well try and expand yourself whereever possible. Supreme Knowledge is the key

Yeah, I feel that, So Do You have anything With Labels Or Distributers going on right now? Anything to get 40Dash Out To an even larger audience?

At the moment, nah Me and my team are trying to Build ourselves up to that level mentally first. But thats in the near future. We havent even assembled a studio demo for the labels yet. We just organizing our schedules to build interlectually for now. Its hard cause of my work schdule really. 3rd shift is nuts g. but soon enough. The only type of deal I would take is a distribution deal . Im not going to become a vitcim of the industry yo. Word up

haaa, Yeah, I didnt take you for the typical feening to be signed type rapper

Theres no point man. Its not that I dont think Im capable. Im fully aware I am, Nowadays a Label is just a piece of paper saying blahblahblah ENT owns your silly ass. And 9 times out of 10 they want to convert your sound to something your not. and in there eyes its, either do it or im not putting your shit out, so your stuck and thats not me... I know some local dudes makin more guap off doin shows that some sucker signed to a label that doesnt promote HIS sound at all

Yeah, speaking of which, How do You Feel About how its lookin for An Indie artist Right Now? Do You think the With the Net And Everything The Playing Field Might be becoming a little more level?

Ill put it this way. Everyone has an equal opportunity to be heard nowadays. Your Goal is to create a buzz. Whether through some type of promo whether it be flyers, Emails, Internet radios . Then you need to hit the venues and perform. Nobodys getting rich off CD sales anymore. You make money off performing. Point blank

I see.. So More Less, Its kinda In The Air For whoevers got what it takes to come for it right now?

its just your hunger for it. Nobodys gonna get it for you. If your musics Hot, and you know what kind of audience you have then exploit it. Air yourself out. Give out burnt CDS for free with a track or 2 and an intro saying COME SEE ME TONIGHT AT BLA BLA BLA bring your friends this shit gonna be off the chain... you just need a marketing plan

Yeah, I Can Feel That... So.. Is There Anything You want People To Know Right Now? Any shout outs you wanna make?

Shout outs To the Whole Rhode Island Hip Hop Scene, Prov, Pawtucket, Everyone Who still makes REAL music, To the cats that listen to the REAL MUSIC we make. Joel Venom, Chito, MFC Shout to you 151. The whole team Knuckle Up, Trey Questions, Danny James, Shouts out to Jesus Christ.. that about it fam

Aite, So I wish You Luck With Your Upcoming Court date..With that saidd Weee Outtt

PEACE

OneFiftyOne Owns Joel Venom In A Debate About DOA

lmao.. I'm A dick for posting this... But I feel like nobody is really getting to the bottom of the whole DOA argument, and everyones looking at the smaller picture...

plus I owned this nigga lmao...

Joel Venom
OneFiftyOne

webstar and browz have big ass points tho..jay iz kinda being biased.

what I think Jay was Saying Was let The niggas that Owned It Do It.. And Stop Jocking them...

cuz Kanye Pain and wayne all had like a thing going... and everyone else kinda played it out.

The thing about there argument.. Is there saying "Jay had to be talking about them cuz there the only people doing it other than wayne kanye and pain" Then Go On to point out the million other people that are doing it... Which kinda... contradicts themselves and in a way Proves jays point.. But nobody really seemed 2 notice it.

I think They have a point... But only cuz they dont understand jays point. like what there saying.. Is less of a valid argument, and more of a good question.

They should just ask him what exactly he means and who he's talking about.. Instead of just assuming he means them.. Cuz when I first heard this shit.. I didn't think about either one of these niggas..

nah man thats where your wrong see..the first person to use it was Cher..and thats not even hip hop so if anything its t pain and all of those niggaz who OWNED it..that are using it..jay's talking out his ass whether you want to believe it or not..its the truth..thats why you dont make tracks like that..because theres going to be a million arguements started and alot of heads tilted.

lets be serious now..how would it be cool for those guys to use it and not anyone else? when in fact their tracks are annoying as shit with it.

come onnnnnnnnnnnnnn. lol.

lol Nooo.. Thats why you DO make Tracks Like this...

cuz the Controversy and Boldness of this Track Is what Got it 100,000 Zshare downloads the first night.

He made this cuz 75% of Hip Hop Fans Are Annoyed With autotune, But As long as the Radio Keeps Pushing it.. The Trends gonna keep going.

What he's saying is the shit is oversaturated.

True or False? I mean at this point.. We've both used autotune.. I mean. lets be honest.. Its a fun effect to use.. But the sound in general is played out as hell...

& He might be excluding kanye wayne and pain from it.. But thats cuz there not using it as a way to get an easy hit... They all Had Hits... Without autotune Cept Pain but T Pain Popularized it.. Yeah cher started it, But Good Year Aint Invent the Wheel But You mean to tell me them niggas Aint responsible for putting Tires on the map? lol?

fuck you..you win lmao.

At War With Earth - Joel Venom Airs Out Producer Evo's Situation With Joe Budden, His Album, Myspace Groupies And More.

OneFiftyOne
Joel Venom

Ok, How Do You Feel About Rap Right Now...

rap is decent..not something that i like to hear these days..im more into the hip hop scene..most rappers are one dimensional..they only rap about one thing..the streets..i dont care what anyone says..i dont care if your from the hood or the burbs..if your an artist..try to expand your ideas and make something creative..not something that everybodies been doing for the past fuckin eon..its getting to be like autotune.

Ok, I see..
So How Do You Feel About The Current Status of The Internet Game.. Meaning The lil Obscure Thing We Got Going On Here? Like Do You belive this Can Have Any Effect on the Larger Playing Field?

yea anythings possible..i meen look at most of the blogs out here already..people are getting their tracks posted up and getting recognized quickly..downloads are sending more a message than just someone leaking your track..its showing how much people ARE WILLING to listen to your track and have it for themselves..i think if we all branch out and promote ourselves we should be seeing each other somewhere in the near future

Ok... I can feel that.
Speaking of Branching Out and Promoting.. Whats Your Situation With Music Brokers?

my situation with music brokerz is actually pretty sketchy to tell you the truth, they talk a good game about getting your music out there..i was supposed to have my contract distributed on monday, but instead out of the blue my cousin got his contract from them and told me he was going to go over it with his lawyer and the rest of his group to see if their even official. Now with me they(Avery employee @ Music Brokerz) went from talking to me 3 straight weeks asking when im ready and i clearly told them im ready to go...NOW so we can jump this off. Unfortunately last week they hit me up asking me who i was and i laughed on the phone and told them who i was,Avery one of the employees..and he was asking me the same questions that he asked me before as well as his boss asking me who i was a couple days ago. I looked into them from the beginning and typed their name in on a site that my mother told me to surf..the site was a search engine where you type in a business name and it comes up with all types of info..and to my surprise their name didnt come up with anything..not even anything having to do with music lol. so to tell you the truth i can still work with them but by the actions that have been displayed as of now im still doing promotion by myself..which is the best way to do things..im also on a couple of blog sites big name ones too

sounds like an example of Industry rule number 4080?

yes exactly my point but i must say..they did send a couple songs to xm radio but i dont know if thats true or not im going by what they told me
and one big fact that i learned lol this ones really funny..

yeah?

If a Dj gets at you about hosting a tape..and THEN tells you his prices..most likely he's not really interested in your project..thats what Music Brokerz told me..BUT they themselves did the same thing with me..which was kind of being hypocritical lol i thought that was funny

Yeah... Alot of people Are Out for there Own In this Game.
Any other Plans For Distribution then?

yes many plans, napster, limewire, itunes, amazon mp3,rhapsody, also im going to holla at DJ Ophax..im still talking with DJ Young Cee but i've heard from many that shadyville doesnt move as many units as they should..so i might just try Ophax or my main man DJ Chito!
but mixtapes will be cut short because of the album in the works with me and my producer

I see... speaking of Evo... I Remember You Talking about a Situation With Evo and Joe Budden?

Yeah, that story right there is the most surprising that i've ever heard..i actually heard his under the sun beat before budden even came close to finishing mood muzik 3..which was funny because i was going to get at evo for the beat before buddens did..but basically buddens asked to use the beat gave evo his Manager/A.R's contact (Killah B.H) and said he was going to give Evo credit for making the beat and what not..thats cool..but the nigga didnt even pass evo royalties..when he said he was going to give evo credit for that beat i expected more than just a name "Evo(Beats Ink)" on Amalgam Digitals Main site under halfway house..i meen buddens has done the same to VTZ(Better than me..remember that? smh) as well..you just cant be snatchin peoples beats and making a hit off of them..Under The Sun was a hit on the underground seen and the beat itself has touched many hearts..my nigga Evo made that shit because he was thinking of how much he loved his daughter..so its more than just a beat that someone would consider..samples and what not..its from the core nah meen.

Oh, So Budden Kinda... Dicked Your Boy Out of What he Felt was Owed to Him?

Yes thats what he did..but thats how most of those niggas work i just felt it was low to do that to someone whos trying to come up.

Yeah, I can definately see where your comming from.
On The Music Brokers Blog I remember Seing A Video about some Dudes who claimed to have 30G's up to box budden, and Said they had money for anyone with dirt on budden... Could you see Yourself or evo Taking It to that level?

first off if i even took it to that level i wouldnt put up money on this situation i would just see the bul and clock him on site cause thats what im known to do already when it comes to my problems that i feel i should handle, but on the other hand im not trying to come up off of this buddens situation,,thats just a weak point to me..i dont wanna look back at my career and have people say "oh thats joel..who?..mannn u remember that dude who got into beef wit budden over etc...OHHHHH yah i know him" Nah..thats stupid so to be honest i wouldnt go to that point..but if Evo was down for that then whatever happens happens.

I see.. Yeah, From What I've Seen In Joe Budden Blogs and Interviews.. He seems like an inteligent dude... He seems like someone who might wanna look out for an up and commer.. do you think theres any chance that this situation could be a missunderstanding of any kind? Because It seems sorta foul To not give a Producer what he was promised in return for his beat.

nah i meen go over on the site my dude its there..all there is are the produced who produced for the project..and its just his name..no shout outs..all over google to beat is being given out for free..his name isnt titled over it anywhere at all i already checked. niggaz trippin

so he's listed as a producer, just didnt get the royalties he was told he would get?

not even that the other dudes got royalties i bet

Yeah, that sounds real shady
But On a Lighter Note... How's the Myspace Groupies treating you?

oh man thats a whole nother story man lol. groupies hit me up every other day asking for my digits or if i could comment all their pics..i know i know u haters are just gonna say "stupid nigga..they do that to erbody"..but my question is..do they do that to you? lmao..but yea man i dont stress it as much the more females the merrier

haha... I See... Ok, So.. whats good with your album
we've been talking about everything but havent adressed that lol

Well the album is called "At War With Earth" and the topic is very deep..it explains how im feeling right about now and what my chances are looking like living life..Evo is doing the main producing,im in line with producing some of the hits but im also looking for anno to send me something and possibly Rhapsodist i already have the one joint he lent me for my album and that is a true hip hop hit!..i dont wanna spoil it tho you'll have to listen haha

so.. Is there any chance of a earth shattering collabo with onefiftyone Where Y'all Both go in on a Evo Beat And Shake up Shit A Lil bit?

well i meen thats if the fans can deal with that ya meen? lol its something that i am definitely going to look into and it will work out on both sides.

haha word
Ok, so what havent we covered? Is there anything you wanna speak on?

nothing i really have left to say, only that i see everything thats said about me. so dont be scared im a hear about it sooner or later.
and thats that

you got a release date for your album?

it was supposed to drop on my birthday BUT..wait for it
just peep itunes every now and then lol

Book - The Men Behind Def Jam: The Radical Rise of Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin

Now I copped this book quite a while back while in Borders Book Store. Now trust me im not one to be much of a reader, but given at the time I had just begun a course on Music Industry Business. I figured i'd read up on none other than the two men who founded the urban music label that pioneered the Hip Hop Industry and further brought to light the elements of its culture.

Published November 2006, written By Alex Ogg. Who is also the author of The Hip Hop Years and a consultant for the channel 4 tv series of the same name. Ogg examines in this book, the unlikley partnership between black entrepreneur Russell 'Rush' Simmons and ex-punk Rick Rubin. The book tracks the history of both men from such times as Simmons early organising of parties at venues, such as the "Renaissance" in New York (His first party he ever threw was at this Queen's venue in the 1970's) and early show bookings for 'hip hop luminaries such as Lovebug Starski, DJ Hollywood and Grandwizard Theodore throughout the five borrows of New York' in the late 1970's. To Rubin's student dorm, where numerous demos built up over time. LL Cool J's tape finding also its way into this mix. Ending up in the hands of none other than Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz, finding the tape in the amounting crates of demo's and bringing it to Rubin's attention.

The book also covers such artists and acts as Run-DMC, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, EPMD, Jay-Z, DMX, Redman, Method Man & Foxxy Brown. An also mentions such pivotal figures in Hip Hop such as DJ Kool Herc & Afrika Bambaataa. I would say this book is one of the most unbiased and revealing books on the rise of the label and the the two men at the center of it. Definitely worth the read, given the wealth of knowledge it holds on the rise of the men who rose Def Jam from a college dorm room to the cornerstone, of Hip Hop Record Labels.

As it says in the blurb "Here is an honest appraisal of the rival personalities, the quarrels, the successes and the failures of the spectacular Def Jam Adventure. An Ogg definitely delivers on such a statement.

Article - The Current State Of Hip Hop

Current State of Hip Hop.
By: ILLogicalScripts

Hip-hop has came a long way from spray painting the walls in Philadelphia and subways in New York City and street cyphers on the corner of the neighborhoods to being a worldwide hobby and profession. After decades of existance, has the art form progressed or degressed? Is the spoken form of the art gone? This article will express views from multiple standpoints and provide in depth analysis of it's current state, and provide you with a brief history of each element to give you a better understanding of why it may be how it is.

Hip-hop.

From the birth on the street corners to the present day mainstream movement, hip hop has come a long way, from people believing that it was a temporary fad that would fade away in time to becoming known across the globe. After decades of its existence, people have one common debate. Has this art form progressed or has it degressed?. Both sides deliver good arguments on what they believe the current state is, but none have come to a definate conclusion. But to better understand how it is moving we need to take a look at what it used to be and where it is now.

Although there is some controversy onto where abouts hip hop was founded, the one true place that we can say that the hip hop that we know was birthed in New York City in the 1970s. In a time when racial boundarys was a very relevant and noticeable problem, people in urban areas searched for an escape, something that moved them and kept them out of trouble. They needed something that there soul could relate to, and that is entertaining and challenging at the same time. This birthed the creation of breakdancing.

In the early 70's people started using a deep drum that originated in Africa and played a common rythm that would make people move. This drum played a beat that echoed in there souls and sparked something in them that they have not felt before. With the anger that they had built up from the reality of the times and the need for a positive hobby in there life, they started to move there bodys to the beat. They would use fighting moves without actualy contact and the other person who evade there punches by dropping to the floor, or incorporated another sort of move that would work in rythm to the music. As multiple styles of dance would come into the cyphers it evolved from a rythmic fight to one person in the middle displaying his talent, others would jump in and do the same.

As people watched kung fu movies, they started to take a great interest in acrobatics and shortly after, you would see aerial movements as well as floor work in the cyphers. As visitors came into New York and Philadelphia, they noticed these breakdancers and brought it with them to there homes and it grew from there. Decades later, this element of hip hop is seen on worldwide competitions, on T.V. , in schools and on some street corners. It has become very flashy and there are a few people who still incorporate the original movements into there styles. That can be from the art evolving or just trying to fit in with mainstream public standards and what can catch there eyes.

The element of hip-hop that we see on a daily basis these days, would be rapping. Emcees originated during a turbulent time in Americas history. Drugs were sweeping the inner-city neighborhoods and gangs have made a very real impact on the way people were living. As an escape from the turmoil, people started to express themself in a poetic way. They took the beats that were being used by breakdancers, and wrote to them. They used life experiences, their feelings, views on what is going on in the world, the struggle to guide there words. The Nation Of Islam also greatly affected hip-hop. People like Kool G Rap, Rakim, Saul Williams and Brand Nubian brought great knowledge to the music and paved a new path for the culture of hip-hop. They took a great influence from the blues and based there delivery off of that and there emotional state at the time.

If they were mad they would yell it, if they were happy they would express it with a tone symbolic of joy. The people felt what they were saying and could relate to this type of music and it quickly attached itself to there hearts. Soon after the birth of rap, it was being used at block partys and in clubs. It would be a way to keep everyone focused on self and there mind would be tuned in to a rythmic up-beat song. Emcees would use melodic chants to pump up the crowd and start there verse while the audience was already dancing. Knowing this, makes you realize that rap started off as a form of expression and then soon carried over to pumping up the crowd and dancing. Anything to keep the positive vibes flowing continuosly throughout the entire song. The language of rebellion also started with what we now call "Mainstream Club" or "Ringtone Rap". Though back then they did not have the resources we now have and there influence was from life.

The next element will be graffiti, arguably one of the most untouched art forms of hip hop. Graffiti can trace its roots to the ancient mayans and egyptians when they would scribe the way they were living on the walls and also whos reign it was. It has also been a way to leave behind a trail and story of a certain being or group of people. In hip-hop, it started with this chalk that would etch itself onto walls when it was being drawn and would sketch what the artist was trying to get out. It was new to the city and people had very undecided views upon it. It did not start from gangs trying to mark there territorys, that came later on in the evolution of graffiti. The first "bombs" or simple bubble letters that an artist could get to the public view fairly quickly was also created in New York by youth in the inner-city. They would sketch their names on walls, trains, billboards to get there names up and leave there "story" behind.

They soon went on to aerosol cans of paint. It was a much quicker process to get their tags up then their previous method and it would stay on the surface for a greater duration of time. Over the years, letters have turned into storys on a wall. People would paint murals behind there tags and it would appeal to the public in a much greater view. It has came from simple bubble letters to greatly colored interwoven pieces that we can see today, in virtually every city in the U.S. and most of the world. The negative aspect arisen, as in any big movement. It gained followers, everyone that saw it wanted to get up. They started to paint anything that they would see and it got associated with gang activity which did not appeal to the mass public. It still is seen as a great form of expression by the artist who have a great deal of knowledge on the art. But has been driven into mainstream society and broken down into various categorys in which graffiti can not be distinctly associated into a positive form of art in.

This element, is the element that has affected hip-hop the most. From the clubs, to the block partys to basements across the globe. DJ'ng has become the pushing force of hip-hop. In any producers arsenal of equiptment, you will see turntables. Turntables were used to spin the vinyl records that emcees had there beats on. With the turntables they could scratch, freeze, put in in slow motion, speed it up or change the tempo of the music. That was a very powerful weapon in hip hop. It requires a great ear for music and could very well affect the outcome of the crowds reaction. It has gone virtually un-noticed by the average listeners, but without Turntable Technicians, hip hop today would not be what it is and could arguably not have succeeded. The present day DJ still keeps in roots with the golden age and has changed very little. The equiptment has changed but that only affected this element in a positive way. This could be the link that holds hip hop together and could be what keeps it striving. It is used in battles, at graffiti events you will see DJ's spinning underground music, at school dances. DJ's are everywhere!

In conclusion. Hip Hop has always been for the people. Back in the golden era age, they did not have a very strong influence in other rappers, they had life. That's why we will say that it has changed in a negative aspect. They had very little equipment to use, so they did not have the resources we currently have, as in Condenser Microphones, Autotune, Sampling. They just took what they had and made the best out of it. Hip hop was born a struggling poor peasent and has grown into a wealthy businessman. In the golden era, people would still use chants to get the crowd pumped up, but would incorporate a fair share of wisdom and originality in their lyrics. These days, people have so much resources that they can say very little and have it work. It's all due to the publics view. They were once struggling and they can now provide for their familys. It was all about escape and that is exactly what is currently going on. They have made it. Although I'm not a fan of the "dumbed down" lyrics. They have done what rappers before them have tried to do and have succeeded in doing so. Hip-Hop has made it.

From this article I hope that you can gain perspective on hip hop as a whole and can paint a picture of how it was in the beginning. Create a timeline and think about what was going through their minds when they were created this beautiful artform. Then think, has hip-hop progressed or has it died down?
